Expansion of infrastructure of district jailin Arunachal

Itanagar:Expansion of infrastructure of the district jail located at Jollang, near here is in progress to overcome accommodation problems of the inmates, Chief Secretary Ramesh Negi said here on Friday. Negi visited the jail yesterday to inspect the ongoing construction of an extension building. When his attention was drawn to the fact that the jail presently accommodating 133 inmates in excess to its capacity of 44 prisoners, which is in violation of human rights as the basic facilities were inadequate for all of them, the chief secretary said that the building on completion would house 100 inmates and solve the problem. “A grant of Rs 10 crore was sanctioned by the 13th Finance Commission and the building is built with first installment of Rs 2.5 crore. Another installment of Rs 2.5 crore has been received while more grants sought from the 13th and 14th Finance Commissions which will help improve the district jail at Tezu in Lohit district, he said. “Jail reforms are taken up on priority by the state government to check repeated jail breaks,” Negi added. The CS who inspected various parts of the jail also distributed certificates to the inmates who have undergone HIV tests conducted by the Arunachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) on Wednesday. Negi while addressing the inmates expressed his happiness over various activities like adult education, gardening and skill development training programme under the National Youth Project (NYP) taken up by IGP (Prisons) Satyen Garg to reform the inmates. Class VIII student mowed down

Jorhat: A class eight student of the Don Bosco School in upper Assam’s Jorhat town was knocked down by a truck near Rajabari Tinali on the busy Jorhat Garali–Mariani Road on Friday, police sources said. The boy, identified as Nishan Chetri returning home from school on his bicycle, was hit by the truck from behind killing him on the spot, the sources said. The boy, stated to be a brilliant student, was returning from school after writing his annual examination, the sources said. The mob blocked the Jorhat-Mariani Road for several hours.(PTI)

138 gm of Heroin seized, one person detained

Aizawl:Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department’s Anti Narcotic Squad (ANS) seized 138 grams of heroin near the Mizoram Myanmar border in Champhai district and arrested a person in this connection. The Spokesman of the department Peter Zohmingthanga said that the ANS personnel stopped a vehicle coming from Myanmar at Zokhawthar hamlet and seized the contraband while being transported to be sold in Aizawl last night. The contraband was worth around Rs 5.5 lakh in Aizawl market while it would around Rs 4.5 lakh in and around Champhai.Malsawmdawngkima (20) of Champhai town, arrested in this connection was booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, Zohmingthanga added. Nagaland Adventure Club organises GHAT for tourists

Kohima:Nagaland Adventure Club (NAC) has informed that the Great Hornbill Adventure Trail (GHAT) scheduled to be held from December 6 to 10, will now be made open to all. In an official statement, the club said the five-day adventure extravaganza, which is being organised by NAC, will cover Kohima, Peren, Zunheboto and Phek the four district of the state, as the as destination districts. Bordering on the idea of helping the participants to know more about the places and cultures of the different tribes of the state, the event which carries a cash prize of Rs 10 Lakh to the winning duo, has been made open to locals as well as tourists.Interested participants can visit www.tourismnagaland.com for details of the event or can visit the Nagaland Adventure Club group on Facebook. Entries of the event will be closed on November 30, and the participants will be briefed on the event on the same day while the final scrutiny for the event will be held on December 5. (UNI)

Art & Culture Dept. arranges cultural prog in Hornbill Fest

Kohima:The Nagaland Art and Culture (A&C) Department has informed that it was all set for the Hornbill Festival 2014, daily cultural performance at the main arena of the Naga Heritage village at Kisama, about 12 Kms east of Kohima. In a statement A&C Department Director Vevo Sapuh said cultural troupes from all the tribes would be arriving soon to showcase their traditional attires, folk songs and dances. The artists’ corner at the World War 11 museum premises would display the art works, demonstrative arts and live-sketching, painting exhibition, art competitions, slide show and talks. It has also been informed that archive’s stall would showcase a rare collection of original documents from public records, private records, rare historical and geographical maps, news paper clippings and rare books and sale of departmental publications, with reading facilities for interested students, scholars and researchers, the statement said.
