New Delhi: Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung on Saturday directed the Chief Secretary and other officials to take immediate steps for providing succour to those affected in the demolition drive at the Rangpuri Pahadi slums.
Meeting the represen-tatives of the affected families at Raj Niwas here, Jung told them that relief would be immediately extended to them and the government would also consider a long-term solution for their problem.
Jung directed the Chief Secretary, Divisional Com-missioner (Revenue) and other officials concerned to take all steps to provide immediate aid and assis-tance to the affected people. Around 900 jhuggis were demolished on Tuesday by the revenue and forest departments at Rangpuri hills in the Vasant Kunj area of south Delhi.
The drive, which was carried out by a district task force, left many homeless in the capital’s harsh winter. A senior Delhi government official had said the drive was part of an effort to restore forest areas.
Meanwhile, according to a report submitted by the representative from the LG’s office who visited the site of the demolition drive, tents are being erected there to provide shelter to the affected families.
Durries and blankets, too, have been provided while three mobile toilet units are in place and more are being arranged. Drinking water and food packets are also being distri-buted among the people at Rangpuri. Jung directed the Deputy Commissioner to be present at the site along with his team as the above arrangements are put in place.
“The LG has taken a serious view of the demo-litions at Rangpuri Pahadi, particularly in the wake of the onset of winter. (PTI)
