HC issues notice to Commissioner of Customs

SHILLONG: The Division Bench of the High Court of Meghalaya comprising of Chief Justice Uma Nath Singh and Justice T.N.K Singh issued a notice of criminal contempt to the Commissioner of Customs Gaigongdin Panmei (Preventive) North Eastern Region.

Panmei wrote a letter to the Registrar General, High Court of Meghalaya on November 21 requesting to withhold the pending cases of the department for sometime since the terms of engagement of Tshering Yangi, Departmental Counsel has already expired.

The High court said that a request of such nature to the Registrar General of High Court amounts to interference with the administration of justice and constitutes to criminal contempt.

The Division Bench of High Court through the order on May 27 issued a show cause notice to the Commissioner of Customs (Preventive) North Eastern Region asking him to file an affidavit in writing on December as to why contempt proceedings cannot be drawn against him.
