Protest over cook’s death turns violent, cop injured

Morena (MP):Enraged over the death of a cook, who was allegedly set afire by a hotel owner recently, local residents of a community held a violent protest outside the Collectorate here on Wednesday in which a head constable was injured, police said. The protesters hurled stones following which police fired in air and lobbed teargas shells to disperse them. The mob also damaged two police vehicles, Morena Superintendent of Police Navneet Bhasin said. The deceased, identified as Girraj Rajak (45), worked as a head cook at a local hotel. He was allegedly beaten and set afire on November 27 after being doused in kerosene by hotel manager Tulsiram when he demanded his balance wages. Soon after the incident, police arrested the hotel manager under charges of attempt to murder, the SP said. Rajak was shifted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital for treatment where he died yesterday, he said.(PTI)

SP, SDPO removed for police beating JD(U) student wing

Patna: The axe fell on senior police officers of Bhojpur district with Superintendent of police and Sub Divisional Police Officer issued transfer order in the wake of alleged beating up two leaders of the JD(U)’s student wing for trying to climb the dais during former chief minister Nitish Kumar’s ‘Sampark yatra’. Bhojpur SP Rajesh Kumar and SDPO Deepak Ranjan have been transferred from Bhojpur district, according to a notification issued by state Home department on Tuesday night.The decision to remove the SP and SDPO came after a probe by Inspector General of Police, Patna zone, A K Ambedkar. 2004 batch IPS officer Akhtar Hussain will take place of Rajesh Kumar as Bhojpur SP, the notification said. Kumar has been posted with office of Director General of Police. Binod Kumar Raut will replace Deepak Ranjan as SDPO. (PTI)

55 yr-old arrested for cheating and stealing from old persons

Chennai: A 55-year-old man has been arrested here on charges of cheating old persons and stealing cash and gold ornaments from them by promising to help them in getting old-age pension, police on Wednesday said. Police filed a case based on a complaint from a woman, who alleged that a fellow passenger during her travel from Kancheepuram to Tambaram promised her to get old age pension soon after they alighted, but did not return after he took away her gold ornaments and cash of Rs 30,000. Investigation revealed that similar cases have been filed in other police stations in the city and a detailed probe involving CCTV footage pointed at a person.Identified as Murali alias Kotti (55), he took to this practice of cheating with his earlier experience in a party where he was helping people get old age pension, police said.(PTI)

BSF arrests 27 with drugs, foreign currencies along IB

Jaisalmer:Twenty seven persons, including five Pakistani intruders and five Bangladeshi nationals, were arrested this year for allegedly possessing narcotics worth Rs 1.6 lakhs and several foreign currencies along the International Border (IB) here, BSF officials said. “BSF personnel have arrested five Pakistani intruders, five Bangladeshi nationals along with 17 Indians this year. They were found involved in various suspicious activities along the International Border,” Border Security Force (BSF) DIG, Ravi Gandhi said on Tuesday. “BSF sleuths have recovered over 27 kg of opium husk worth Rs 1.6 lakhs, Rs 313 Pakistani rupees and USD 50,” he said. The Force also seized four country made pistols, eight sim cards and two motorcycles. The perpetrators were handed over to the local police, Gandhi said. (PTI)

Couple kidnaps landlord’s son, arrested

Jaipur:A 4-year-old boy was allegedly kidnapped by a couple who were staying as tenants in their house in Sawai Madhopur area but later rescued, police said on Wednesday. The accused couple identified as Sumant Ghosh and Saroj went to the boy’s school claiming to be his guardians and took him away, Sanjay Sharma, Kotwali police station in-charge said. Meanwhile, a student of the same school spotted the boy crying and informed police about it, he said. With the help of locals, the couple was arrested and the boy handed over to his family members. The accused couple confessed during interrogation that they kidnapped the boy to demand ransom for paying their debts, Sharma said, adding a case of abduction has been registered against the accused.
