SHILLONG: KHNAM general secretary Batkupar Wahlang said that the problem of influx will dwindle if the local youths of the state can overshadow outsiders in all walks of life.
“The local youth have to prove that they are the best and have the capacity to replace the people from outside in the different profession. This is the best way to push back the foreigners since they will have nothing to do in our State,” Wahlang said while speaking at the Second Youth Convention organized by the party’s youth wing held here on Friday.
He said that local youths should try to do things which are productive to the society.
”We have to proof that we have the capability to be self reliant in all spheres and this would ultimately lead to the dwindling in the number of foreigners who are residing in the state. But this can happen only if they are engaged in positive things,” Wahlang said.
The general secretary also observed that it is useless to shout slogans like ‘‘Go back foreigner’’, if the youths of the society end up indulging in non-productive activities.
To support his statement, Wahlang made a reference to the recent incident where young college and school going students were picked up by the police from different areas of the city for drinking illegally in public places. He further rued that if one behaves in such a manner, they cannot be expected to become officers of the rank of IAS, lecturers or other important positions in the state.
The general secretary therefore urged the youths to be the light and symbol for the growth and development of the state.
In his speech, MDC James Ban Basaiawmoit said KHNAM is a unique party unlike other political parties who forced the youths to join their parties by giving them false promise of better jobs, contract works and others. ‘‘We do not believe in giving false hopes to our youth. Our objective is to create a sense of pride among the youth about his roots,” he said.
He further suggested the new body of the KHNAM Youth Wing to take up different issues concerning the youths of the state. “The youth wing should take up the matter with the State Power Minister to ensure that the students’ community in the state, are not subjected to harassment by frequent power cuts during their upcoming examinations,” he said.
