New Delhi: The North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP), 2007 which was suspended by the Centre on December 1 evoking widespread protest all over the region will resurface in a new form, Union Minister for Industries, Nirmala Sitharaman said on Friday.

The NEIIPP will come up with amendment and additions suitable for the Northeastern region, the Union Minister told MPs from the ruling BJP from the North East who met her on Friday.

BJP MP from Jorhat, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, informed that the Union Minister has assured that the policy will be suitably modified to suit the specific needs of the region and its emerging economy. It is noteworthy that the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has suspended the registration under the schemes of NEIIPP 2007 on December 1, with immediate effect.

Soon after the new government took over in New Delhi it had hinted that tight norms would be put in place to plug massive leakages and anomalies in various subsidies provided for industrialization in Northeast India.

All the chief ministers and MPs from the Northeastern region had decided to move the Prime Minister for revoking this order. The Federation of Industry and Commerce of the North East Region has also demanded restoration of the policy.

Meanwhile, the Congress has decided to observe December 21 as ‘betrayal day’ to protest the BJP government’s policy towards North East India.

State Union to submit resolutin to PM

Meanwhile, the Joint Demonstrative meeting of members of All India Trade Union Congress, Meghalaya Unit and Meghalaya Joint Council of Trade Unions and Associations on Friday staged a demonstration in the city. Later it was resolved that a copy of the resolutions would be sent to the prime minister and demanded immediate withdrawal of the order.
