10 killed as truck plunges into dry river bed in Gujarat

Ahmedabad:In a major road accident, ten persons, including seven women and a child, were on Saturday killed and five others got injured when a truck carrying them broke the railings of a bridge and plunged into the dry Shetrunji river near Gavadka village in Amreli district, police said. “At least ten persons including seven women and a girl were killed when the truck carrying them fell into the dry river-bed of Shetrunji at Gavadka village on Dhari- Amreli road,” Amreli Taluka Police Inspector U G Shah said. The five injured were taken to the nearest private hospital, while two of them, who are said to be critical, were later shifted to Rajkot civil hospital. The incident occurred when the truck-driver lost control over the vehicle which fell into the Shetrunji river after breaking the railings of the bridge, Shah said. The deceased belonged to an Amreli-based firm ‘Nilkanth Caterers’. However their exact identification is not known, the inspector said. According to a staff-member of the 108 emergency team, 10 persons were killed on the spot. The bodies of deceased have been taken to Amreli civil hospital for postmortem. (PTI)

Nine of family killed in mishap in Rajasthan

Jaipur:Nine persons of a family, including women and children, were killed and one was injured when an SUV, in which they were travelling, collided head-on with a truck in Rajasthan’s Nagaur district. The mishap took place last night in Khinvsar area on Jodhpur-Nagaur road, nearly 35 km from Nagaur district headquarters, when the victims were returning home in Nagaur city after attending a function in Jodhpur, Additional SP Pyare Lal said. “The victims were rushed to a district hospital where eight of them were declared dead and two were referred to Jodhpur hospital. One of them died on the spot and the other is being treated in Jodhpur,” he said. The deceased included three women, as many children, and men. Eight of them were identified as Anwar, Sakir, Umar, Aasif, Farzan, Nadia, Alisha, and Umeda. (PTI)

Hit and Run case : Four youths killed in Haryana

Hisar:In a suspected case of hit-and-run, four youths aged between 20-25 years were killed when the two motorcycle’s on which they were travelling were hit by an unidentified vehicle near village Gaibipur in Hisar district, police said on saturday. The incident took place on Hisar-Chandigarh road when the four friends were coming towards Gaibipur village late last night after attending a function, police said. When they reached near the village, an unidentified vehicle hit their bikes, they said, adding that all four were seriously injured. They succumbed to their injuries when they were brought to civil hospital in Hisar in an ambulance, police said.The deceased were identified as Sonu, Sunder, Rakesh and Baltej. A case has been registered against the driver of the unknown vehicle, who fled from the spot and efforts are on to nab the accused, police said. (PTI)

Parents commit suicide along with children

Barmer:A couple allegedly committed suicide along with their two children by jumping into a water tank in the district, police said on Saturday. Last night, Ruparam (27) and his wife Mangi Devi (24) jumped into a tank located near their house with their daughter, Mohini (2), and one-year-old son, Rageshwari police station in-charge Mularam said. The family was fished out from the tank by Ruparam’s father and other family members who rushed them to a local hospital, where they were declared brought dead, police said. Ruparam was a labourer and returned home a couple of days ago, police said, adding, “His father and other family members were searching for them and later found their bodies in the tank,” he said. The reason for the extreme step is not clear and the matter is under investigation, he said.(PTI)

Errant cop taken into custody

Bulandshahr (UP):A constable, who had hoaxed the police department here by alleging loot of his carbine gun, was taken into custody, police said on Saturday. Constable Vinod had complained to the police that some miscreants of Neemkhera village under Kotwali Dehat Police Station had looted his official carbine gun, SP (City) Rajesh Kumar said here. The police contingent rushed on his call to the village and found that Vinod was under the influence of alcohol and that his complaint was a lie, Kumar said. According to the SP, the constable had a tiff with the villagers over some financial matter and this could be the reason behind his allegations against them. (PTI)

Ammunition recovered from smuggler’s house

Barmer:Ninety-three rounds of 9 mm ammunition have been recovered from a smuggler’s house in Gagaria village here, police said on Saturday. “The ammunition was recovered from smuggler Nabiya’s house after interrogation on Friday night and he is being questioned to ascertain to whom the ammunition was to be delivered,” SP Barmer Paris Anil Deshmukh said. In a joint search operation of Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Special Action Group (SOG), the history-sheeter Nawab alias Nabiya was arrested with his accomplice, on the border district of Barmer on Thursday with counterfeit currency having a face value of over Rs 2.40 lakh. One dies in Uttarakhand blast

Roorkie:A 10-year-old boy was killed on Saturday in an explosion here that took place metres away from a college, where Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was holding an event to mark the anniversary of Babri mosque demolition. Police said the blast took place at a garbage dump, some 20-metres from DAV College. The boy was identified as Tushar. Police said the entire area was cordoned off and they were trying to ascertain reasons behind the explosion. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat told reporters: “As of now we cannot say anything with surety but police are trying to find it out. Let us give them some time to get to the bottom of the incident.” He also expressed grief at the loss of life in the blast. Additional director general of police Ram Singh Meena has left for the blast site to supervise search operation and investigation. (IANS)
