Five naxals surrender in Chhatisgarh

Raipur:Five ultras, including three women who were carrying reward on their heads, have surrendered in Naxal hit Kondagaon and Narayanpur districts of Chhatishgarh district, police said on Sunday. Urmila Vatti, a woman naxal who was carrying a reward of Rs eight lakh, surrendered before the police at Kondagaon district police headquarters, a senior official said. She was the member of No 6 Company of the Naxals and was forced to join the group at the age of 14 when ultras took her with them, he said, adding she decided to surrender after she was fed with alleged sexual harassment by them. The official said four naxals have surrendered in Narayanpur district, which include 30-year-old Rajbati, carrying a reward of Rs five lakh on her head, 22-year-old Phulo, carrying a reward of Rs eight lakh, 26-year-old Mainu, carrying a reward of Rs one lakh and Guddu Salam (24). Police said that the surrendered naxals were in touch with them for some time, as they claimed that naxal leaders of Andhra Pradesh were harassing the naxals cadres of Chhatishgarh and also women ultras were being sexually harassed. Naxals would be rehabilitated as per the government’s policy, police said. (PTI)

Senior DD official hit by car during morning walk, dies

New Delhi:A Deputy Director of Doordarshan was killed on Sunday after being was hit by a speeding car during the morning walk in East Delhi’s Anand Vihar area. The incident took place around 6:30 AM when a car driven by one Manish Tandon (24) hit the 50-year-old Anurag Rastogi from behind, when he had set out for a morning walk. “The impact was so hard that Rastogi was thrown away while the car crashed into a tree. Tandon also received serious injuries in the accident and is battling for his life in Guru Teg Bahadur hospital. Rastogi’s family told us that he was Deputy Director in Doordarshan,” said a senior police official. Tandon had lost control over the car when the incident took place. Rastogi lived with his family in Vigyan Vihar area, police said. (PTI)

Search on to trace accused in cab rape case

New Delhi:A massive search operation was on Sunday on across three states to nab the taxi driver of an international cab-booking service, who allegedly raped a 27-year-old woman on her way home on Friday night. The driver identified as Shiv Kumar Yadav (32) hails from Mathura, UP, and the car in which the crime took place was recovered from the city late last night. Several Delhi Police teams are on a hunt to track him down in Delhi, Haryana and UP. The incident took place at around 9:30 PM on Friday when the woman, who works for a finance company in Gurgaon, was headed back to her home in north Delhi’s Inderlok area. “The woman had gone to a restaurant for dinner with some friends after her shift ended at 7 P.M. One of her friends dropped her till Vasant Vihar from where she hired a cab run by a private company to take her to Inderlok,” police had said citing the complaint filed by the victim. On the way, the woman dozed off on the back seat of the car only to wake up and find that they had stopped at a secluded spot. (PTI)

Seven more held in assault case in Malda

Malda:Seven more persons were on Sunday arrested in connection with the assault of officials of the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) by a Malda district Trinamool Youth Congress leader. Police said two persons were earlier arrested after the WBSEDCL divisional manager of Malda Saibal Mazumdar filed a complaint of assault of officials on Friday by Trinamool Youth Congress leader Biswajit Ray alias “Bullet”.The total number of arrests in the case now stood at nine, police said. The seven arrested were produced in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Malda and the verdict is awaited.Earlier, the two arrested were produced in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Malda yesterday and remanded to judicial custody. Ray was suspended from the party yesterday for six years after he allegedly assaulted WBSEDCL officials in protest against excessive electricity bills. Ray however, is absconding, police said. (PTI)

Technical consultant arrested in Ganjam dist

Odisha: Vigilance sleuths have arrested a technical consultant of project coordinator’s office in Odisha’s Ganjam district for allegedly taking bribe from a head master of an upper primary school to issue completion certificate of some construction work. A trap was laid and Prafulla Chandra Das, technical consultant, Rangeilunda, was caught while allegedly accepting Rs 20,000 from the complainant on Friday to issue completion certificate of construction of additional rooms in the school, said vigilance SP, Berhampur, Manoranjan Panda. While the bribe cash and several relevant documents were seized, his house at Godavarish Nagar here was also searched, the SP said. The findings from the house search were yet to be known.(PTI)

Kiss protest organisers, opponents held

Kozhikode:Police took into custody some activists of the ‘Kiss of Love’ campaign, who had converged at the moffusil bus-stand here on Sunday to protest against moral policing and workers of ‘Hanuman Sena’ who were opposing them. Kozhikode City Police Commissioner A V George told PTI that some activists of the ‘Kiss of Love’ and ‘Hanuman Sena’ have been taken into custody. Some activists of ‘Kiss of Love’ had just reached the bus-stand for the protest when they were whisked away. “We are looking at the situation. So far no ban has been imposed in the area. If there is a law and order issue, we will think about it,” he said. Rahul Pasupalan, IT professional and short filmmaker and one of the organisers of the ‘Kiss of Love’ protest, had said it was to be held around three pm at the bus-stand and they were expecting over 1,000 participants. A Facebook collective of “Free Thinkers” led by Rahul had been arrested and removed by police when they tried to stage the Kiss protest on November 2 at Kochi.(PTI)
