Shillong, Tura set to become ‘WiFi zones’

SHILLONG: The State Government is working on a proposal to provide WiFi connectivity in different parts of Shillong.

Commissioner and Secretary, IT, D.P. Wahlang, informed that the department would call a meeting with service providers to work out the modalities.

Wahlang informed that the State Government was contemplating to implement the scheme in Shillong and Tura in the initial stage, even though he admitted that it would not be possible to cover both the towns entirely with WiFi.

Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had said that the government was aiming to make Shillong a ‘digital city’ by providing WiFi connections in all schools and across the city and other tourist spots where people can have access to internet at all times.

The proposed scheme is being designed to empower the students with the internet to encourage e-learning.
