Militant killed in Kupwara encounter with security forces
Srinagar:An unidentified militant was on Thursday killed in an encounter with security forces in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The exchange broke out in Salkot locality of Kupwara town in north Kashmir this morning as security forces launched an operation following information about the presence of militants there, a police official said. The militant opened fire on the security forces’ positions, triggering a gunfight as the latter retaliated, the official said. The body of the unidentified militant was recovered along with some arms and ammunition from the scene of the encounter, he said. The identity and affiliation of the slain militant are being ascertained, he added. (PTI)
2 Aurobindo Ashram Sisters commit suicide
Puducherry:Two of the five sisters of Sri Aurobindo Ashram here along with their Mother, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Bay of Bengal here, following police action to evict them from their house after a Supreme Court direction on December 9 to vacate the premises within seven days.If they failed to comply with the direction the jurisdictional police must evict them from Ambabhikshu house.According to police, the Sisters Jayashreee Prasad, Arunashri Prasad, Rajyashree Prasad, Nivedita Prasad and Hemalata Prasad along with their parents Prasad (85) and Santha Devi Shree (78) went to Kalapet this morning and jumped into the sea.While, Jaya shree, Arunashrio Prasad, and Santha Devi Shri were dragged away by a High Tide,fishermen from the nearby area resuced the others.(UNI
Five Naxals surrender in Chhattisgarh’s
Raipur:Five Maoists, carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered in the insurgency-hit Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, police said on Thursday. The cadres turned themselves in before police last evening, citing disappointment with the movement, exploitation of lower rank rebels and women by senior Naxal leaders, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Kamlochan Kashyap told PTI. Of the rebels who surrendered, Rajaram Kashyap was working as deputy commander in section-A of a military company of the outlawed CPI (Maoist), while Barsa Sukram was holding similar rank in section-B of the same company, he said adding that the two were carrying a reward of Rs eight lakh each on their heads. Besides, another cadre Ghanriram was an active member of Maoist Military Platoon number-16 and Rs two lakh reward was announced for his arrest.(PTI)
Rs 4.34 crore worth stolen property recovered
Mandya:The Mandya district police have arrested more than 100 habitual offenders and recovered stolen property worth Rs 4.34 crore during the last three months.Out of the recovered goods, properties worth Rs 3.81 crore were returned to the respective owners during a property parade held on the premises of the office of the Superintendent of Police, an official statement said. SP Bhushan Gulabrao Borase said from September to November, several theft, robbery and burglary cases were reported in the district. The offenders had looted properties worth Rs 10.7 crore, he said.The police personnel attached to Mandya, Malavalli, K R Pet and Srirangapatna sub-divisions have detected a number of cases and recovered stolen properties, including gold ornaments, vehicles, tiger skin, Red Sanders logs, iron and other materials, Mr Borase said.
