11 prisoners commit suicide in Delhi jails in 3 years
New Delhi: Eleven prisoners, including the main accused in the December 16 gangrape case, committed suicide while 16 others attempted suicide in Delhi prisons in the past three years. Prison authorities claimed that most of these inmates took the extreme step due to mental stress. Delhi has two jail complexes, one at Tihar which is the largest jail complex in the world comprising nine central prisons while the other one is the District Prison at Rohini Prison Complex. The total number of inmates in the ten prisons is around 12,000 as against the sanctioned capacity of 6,250. According to official data, 11 prisoners committed suicide and 16 attempted to end their lives during the past three years till September 30, 2014. Ram Singh, the main accused in the December 16 gangrape case, allegedly committed suicide inside jail premises in 2013. In order to prevent such incidents, prison authorities have set up ‘Gumsum Panchayat’ in every ward, members of which identify prisoners who are under stress and they are provided counselling by Welfare Officers and counsellors of NGOs. Meanwhile, official records revealed that 40 prisoners could not be released even after they were granted parole/ bail, as on December 11, due to non-availability of surety and financial restraints.(PTI)
Three, including two cops, booked for gangraping girl
Moga:Two cops and one other person were booked for allegedly gang-raping a 19-year-old girl here, police said. The alleged accused had been identified as Moga city South police station’s Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Sukhdev Singh, Head Constable Balwinder Singh, and a local motor mechanic Rajinder Singh, police said. According to a complaint filed by the girl, she had entered into an agreement with the three related to a purchase of a piece of land owned by her here, they said. The three called the girl to the house of one of the accused on October 3 on the pretext of making a payment for the land and gang-raped her, police said. Police is investigating the matter and no arrests had been made in this connection so far. (PTI)
Five theft, robbery cases solved with arrest of a criminal
New Delhi:With the arrest of an armed criminal, the Delhi Police’s Crime Branch has claimed to have worked out five cases of theft and robbery in Karol Bagh and Gole Market areas on Sunday. Police said that it arrested Ajay Kumar from Mayur Vihar area on Thursday, after getting tipped of his presence there to commit another crime, and in the process recovering one improvised pistol along with two live cartridges from him. One snatched mobile phone and a stolen motorcycle have also been recovered from his possession, police said. “He has disclosed that he along with his associates had committed an armed house robbery of gold jewellery weighing about 220 gm in the area of Karol Bagh,” a police officer said. Police said that the accused has “also confessed his involvement in supply of illegal weapons to many persons in Delhi NCR”. (PTI)
Girl gangraped before lover, Two arrested
Malda (WB):A teenage girl was allegedly gangraped in front of her lover on Sunday by a group of five men at Manickchak in Malda district. The police said the accused raped her after tying her lover to a tree near a field this evening. The girl and the boy were going on a bicycle from Manickchak towards Gopalpur when the five men coming on motorbikes stopped them. They picked up the duo on their motorbikes and raped her, the police said. The girl lodged an FIR with the police officers in Manickchak police station and two of the accused were arrested, the police said, adding that a manhunt has been launched to arrest the three others who are absconding. Police rescue six child labourers from Malda-Patna Express
Bhagalpur:Police rescued six children, aged between 8 and 10 years, late on Saturday night from a train at Bhagalpur railway station in Bihar falling under Malda rail division of East Central Railway.According to GRP sources, Mohammad Mukhtar, a resident of Malda district in West Bengal, was escorting six children to Varanasi. As soon as the Malda-Patna express train reached Bhagalpur, the children finding Mukhtar asleep, got out of the train one by one.Sources said when police interrogated the children the facts unfolded. However, the children were unable to pinpoint the bogey of the train in which Mukhtar was asleep.The children, aged 8-10 years, were sent to a children’s remand home. The rescued children were identified as Mohammad Suleman, Mohammad Mojibbar, Rajiv Momin, Sheikh Mubarak, Sheikh Rocky and Alauddin, residents of different villages in Malda district, sources added.
