Centre of excellence for music in Tura soon
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma led the people of Ampati, particularly the youngsters, in karaoke in order to encourage and bring out their singing abilities as well as to help them overcome stage fright at Ampati Mini Stadium on Saturday evening.
Chairperson of Meghalaya Resource Mobilisation and Employment Generation Council, Dikkanchi D. Shira also joined the Chief Minister for a duet during the karaoke session.
The karaoke was held as part of the day-long Mi Gital festival organized by South West Garo Hills District Art & Cultural Society in collaboration with the Art & Culture and Tourism departments, Shillong to celebrate the consumption of new rice after the harvest. A number of events including Song Kristan competition, where communities of the area participated in traditional Christmas group songs and dance besides painting, dancing and Christmas carol competition were also organised as part of the event.
In his brief address, the Chief Minister said that most of the youths of the region are good singers whose talents are waiting to be explored. He informed that the government would soon set up a Centre of Excellence for Music at Tura to provide a platform to encourage and nurture the singing talents of the region.
He said that students get long holidays during the winter season when they tend to get into wrong habits. “Therefore the government is spending a lot of money to organize such events and festivals during the season to be able to engage our young boys and girls creatively,” the Chief Minister said.
The festival, which is the first of its kind in the district, was organized particularly to build the confidence of the youth and children of the area and help them prepare themselves for various state and national-level talent shows and competitions.
