Five people mowed down by lorry

Chennai:Five people, including three members of a family, were mowed down by a speeding lorry which was involved in a multiple collision in Salem district of Tamil Nadu on Monday. Reports received at the police headquarters here said the sand-laden lorry hit a private bus, scooter and a pedestrian. In all 10 people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospitals. The lorry, which was proceeding towards Salem. reached Sandhiyur when the axle broke. The driver lost control of the vehicle and his efforts to apply the brakes failed.In the melee, the over speeding lorry collided with a private bus coming in the opposite direction. The lorry came to a halt after hitting a scooter and running over a woman, who was walking on the roadside. Raja (25), who was driving the scooter, sustained serious injuries in his head and died on the spot. His wife Saroja (21) and their daughter Dharan who, were travelling in the two-wheeler, were also crushed to death on the spot. (UNI)

82-year-old man rapes teenage girl

Hyderabad:A 15-year-old girl was impregnated allegedly by an octogenarian man, who raped her in Adilabad district of Telangana, police said on Monday. The accused A Lasmaiah, aged around 82, allegedly sexually assaulted the girl twice around five months ago at her house when she was alone in Perakapalli village of the district, they said. The accused, who is a relative of the victim, used to frequently visit the girl’s house. When he found that her parents had gone away for work, he raped her twice, said Bellampalli Circle Inspector A Satyanarayana quoting a complaint lodged by the girl’s mother. “Last week, the girl complained of stomach pain to her mother and when she took her to the hospital, the doctors after medical examination informed that the girl was four-months pregnant,” the police officer said. The accused was taken into custody and during interrogation the elderly man allegedly confessed to have raped the girl, the CI said. Probe is on. (PTI)

Fatigue kills elderly woman who stood in queue for pension

Vijayawada:A 70-year-old woman, who was standing in a long queue for almost two hours at a centre here to get herself enrolled for pension benefits, died on Monday after complaining of chest pain, police said.According to Kothapet Inspector of Police, Venkateswarlu, a large number of people had lined up outside the pension enrollment centre at Kothapet since 3 AM. Tired after almost standing there for two hours, the woman, identified as Padala Kanthamma allegedly collapsed on the spot around 5 AM following which she was taken home by her relatives, police said.As soon as she reached her residence, the woman complained of chest pain and was rushed to the government hospital here, where she died while undergoing treatment, police added. Whether the victim suffered a cardiac arrest is yet to be confirmed. (PTI)

Dacoits loot four houses, kill one

Madhubani:Armed and masked dacoits raided four houses in Datuar village under Khajauli police station area, shot dead a person and looted cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees. The desperadoes shot dead the man when he resisted them. Four others, including a woman, were injured. Sniffer dog squad has been pressed into service to trace the robbers, police said.  According to DSP Amod Kumar, about 25 dacoits first raided the house of Vinay Singh and then targeted the houses of Uday Singh, Vijay Singh and Ganesh Singh. ‘They looted cash, jewellery and other valuables estimated around Rs 12 lakhs from the four houses,’ the DSP added. He said the dacoits shot dead Vinay Singh(54) and injured four others.He stated that the deceased was an employee of the health department. The injured have been rushed to the government hospital, he added.  An FIR has been lodged. Police were investigating. (UNI)
