Woman threatens to immolate herself before UP CM residence
Meerut: A 22-year-old woman on Sunday threatened to immolate herself in front of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s residence if action is not taken against six persons, including her husband and mother-in-law, accused of harassing her for dowry. Sheeba wrote to the Chief Minister claiming that she will immolate herself if action is not taken against the six accused, including her husband Javed and her mother-in-law Nanda Begum, and also alleged that the police are complicit with the accused. According to the woman, she had married Javed in March 2013 and soon he and his family started harassing her for dowry. On September 13, Javed allegedly attacked her using a sharp-edged weapon. Later she managed to reach her paternal house, following which a case was registered with the police. Sheeba said a case was lodged against the accused under IPC section 498A (cruelty), 323 (causing hurt), (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) 307 (attempt to murder). She claimed that the accused, who allegedly have the support of some local ministers, are pressuring her to withdraw the case and have also threatened to kill her. (PTI)
Transport unions commence indefinite strike in TN
Chennai:A section of the employees of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation today commenced an indefinite strike pressing for various demands, including wage revision. Eleven trade unions, including, CITU, INTUC and DMK’s Labour Progressive Front are participating in the strike. About 60 per cent of the buses, one of the major mode of public transportation, did not operate following the strike, police said. CITU State General Secretary, A Sounderrajan said the Unions would continue their strike till the Government concede to their demands, including wage revision. The striking employees held a dharna at Tamil Nadu State Express Corporation office here shouting slogans demanding the authorities to take urgent steps to resolve their grievances. Various political parties, including DMK, PMK and Congress urged the Government to convene conciliatory talks immediately with the striking unions and arrive at an amicable settlement. DMK Chief M Karunanidhi in a statement criticised the Government for failing to address the issue at the right time.(PTI)
Gang of armed robbers loot passengers in Patliputra express
Jamui:A gang of armed robbers looted passengers of valuables worth lakhs of rupees in Jharkhand-bound Patliputra Express after stopping it along Bihar-Jharkhand border, police said on Sunday. “Around 20 to 25 armed miscreants boarded the 18621 Patna-Hatia (Ranchi) Patliputra Express at Telwa Bazar and then stopped it by cutting its vaccum hose near pole number 340/20 before Lahaban station last night,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Jamalpur, Arun Dubey said. “They terrorised the passengers and looted cash, ornaments, gadgets like laptops, mobile phones and other valuables worth several lakhs of rupees at gunpoint. All the robbers were in their twenties,” Dubey said. The DSP said though the incident happened within the jurisdiction of Jhajha rail police, an FIR had been registered at Jasidih. Rail police from Bihar and Jharkhand reached the place of incident. Raids are being conducted to trace and nab the robbers. (PTI)
Three members of family drown in Korba
Korba:Three youths drowned while trying to rescue a child from drowning in a waterfall in the district, police said on Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Rehman Khan (40), Sunny Khan (18) and Faizal Khan (18), Vaishya said. The incident took place yesterday afternoon, when the family of Mohammad Asif Khan, a native of Korba, had gone for a picnic at Devpahri here, Katghora police station SHO Gopal Vaishya said. While taking bath in the Govind Jhula waterfall on Chornai river at the spot, a child of the family, Amin (11) slipped in deep waters and seeing him drowning, Rehman, Sunny and Faizal jumped into the waterfall to save him. While rescuing the child, suddenly Rehman was swept by strong currents following which Sunny and Faizal tried to save him but they too were swept away, the SHO said. Amin was somehow be saved as he managed to reach the bank and was dragged out by other family members. (PTI)
Officials booked for registering boy dead for 33 years
Muzaffarnagar:Three persons, including two senior government officials, were booked for allegedly registering a minor boy dead for 33 years in official record, police said on Sunday. A case of cheating against the victim’s brother and the other government officials was registered at Majlispur village for allegedly showing him dead to have claim over his property. According to the police, the incident came to light during a revenue record probe in connection with the land grabbing case at Hastinapur Sanctuary. The victim Mangey Ram, who now turns 49 and from whom the property was unlawfully seized, complained the same probe officials about his brother’s act, they said. It was later revealed that victim’s cousin brother, along with Revenue Inspector Kirshan Kumar and Revenue Clerk Roshan Lal, registered Ram as dead 33 years ago in the official papers, they said. The victim was 16-year-old at the time of the incident. (PTI)
Crown of the deity stolen from Hanuman temple
Lakhisarai:Unidentified thieves last night walked away with the crown of the deity in ancient Hanuman temple located in Salempur village under Suryagarha police station area in Lakhisarai district of Bihar.Police on Sunday said unidentified thieves stole the 500 gram crown of Hanumanji from the temple in Salempur village. According to priest Dharmadas last night, when he went to the temple to offer morning prayers he found the lock of temple’s entrance broken.When the priest went inside the temple, he found the crown on the head of the Hanumanji missing.The priest then lodged an FIR in the concerned police station. Police are investigating the matter. (UNI)
