Sanctuary Lake victims of Nagaland laid to rest
Kohima:The funeral service for the three teenagers of Khonoma village, who drowned at the Dzukou Valley Sanctuary Falls Lake on December 26, was held at Khonoma village at Dopulie Kitie on Tuesday. The bodies of Rokosietso (Martin) Mor (19,male), Keturovino Mor and Mhiesikhono Viyie (girls,14) were brought home to Khonoma village on December 29 and their last rites performed on Tuesday.The funeral rites were performed by Rev. Fr. Dr. Jacob Charallel, Parish Priest, Khonoma Parish while short speeches were delivered by Khriekhoto Mor, Chairman, organizing committee and Rovilato Mor. The victims had drowned in the lake during an outing with friends. Mor said the tragedy has stirred the whole state as well as the regional machineries. He stated that despite difficulties faced during the rescue operation, the unending support and help of the people enabled the retrieval of the bodies.Khriekhoto Mor, relative of the victims, expressed gratitude to all those who extended their support.(UNI)
Home guard killed in encounter with rhino poachers
Orang(Assam):A home guard was killed on Wednesday in an encounter between forest guards and poachers at Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park in Assam’s Sonitpur district, where a rhino carcass was found. Park sources said forest guards, including home guards, got engaged in a gun battle with a gang of poachers around 1.30 am inside the park. The home guard, identified as Sushil Sil, was seriously injured and succumbed on way to the hospital. During search operation, the carcass of the pachyderm with its horn sawn off was recovered near Belsiri camp of the Park, the sources said. (PTI)
Hirendra Nath Dutta gets Assam Valley Literary Award
Guwahati:Renowned poet and Sahitya Akademi Award winner Hirendra Nath Dutta has been chosen for the 25th Assam Valley Literary Award, for the year 2014. The Assam Valley Literary Award is given by the Williamson Magor Education Trust, with the purpose of giving an impetus to education and cultural progress within the state. The Award will be formally conferred on Mr Dutta in March next, a statement said here today. Mr Dutta has to his credit several collections of poems, two collection of critical essays and has also edited an anthology of Assamese poetry. (UNI)
Govt to set up state university for Tripura
Agartala: The Tripura Government would set up a separate university for the state besides the existing central university, a minister said on Wednesday.“We have prepared the State University bill to set up a state university. It would be tabled in the meeting of the council of ministers to be held on January 7 for its finalization. The same bill would be placed in the winter session of the state assembly beginning in February and if passed, the university would be set up”, State Higher Education minister Tapan Chakraborty told reportersChakraborty said all infrastructure for setting up the university was ready and added that the varsity would be started initially taking four colleges of the capital under its affiliation.To a question, he said there was no conflict between the Tripura Central University and the proposed state university and there would be no problem regarding giving affiliations to the colleges.
