HYDERABAD: An advocate has filed a petition against New England Brewing Company in Rangareddy court accusing the firm of insulting Mahatma Gandhi by printing his images on their liquor bottles.

Advocate Janardhan Reddy said he filed the petition in the XI Metropolitan Magistrate court and the court was yet to taken a decision on the petition.

The beer brand in question is called “Gandhi-Bot”, and the name was well-publicized despite many Indians living in the United States protesting against it.

The petitioner requested the court to summon the company’s representatives as per section 3 (Punishment of offences committed beyond, but which by law may be tried within India) of IPC for misusing the image of the Father of Nation.

Gandhi-Bot is an intensely hopped Double India Pale Ale, with a blend of three varieties of American hops. Aromatic and fully vegetarian, Gandhi-Bot is an ideal aid for self-purification and teh seeking of truth and love,” reads the description of the product.

The advocate has claimed that the issue is highly condemnable and punishable, according to Indian Laws and amounts to offence under Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act,1971, and Section 124-A of IPC.

He also added that this is an insult to Mahatma Gandhi. (Agencies)
