Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to apprise the members of general public as well as the Education Department, Government of Meghalaya that Islamia Secondary School, Shillong is not the ancestral property of any individual or family. This is one of the oldest schools and it was established in 1920 by the residents of Shillong. The plot of land on which the school stands was purchased by donations collected by the Managing Committee of the school. Later an Assam Type school building was constructed on the land. In course of time with the increase in admissions Islamia Madrassa metamorphosed into a Secondary School.

The claim of a particular family to be the parent body and founder family is preposterous. Records bear testimony to the fact that the school does not have a founder family or parent body or founder heir member. It is not permissible under the Rule for the time being in force to induct somebody as a founder heir member in the Managing Committee of any school.

The claim of the self styled parent body or founder family or founder heir member is baseless, unsubstantiated and devoid of legality. I dare them to file a declaratory suit in a court of law with competent jurisdiction to get themselves declared as parent body or founder family or founder heir member. Of course, they are at liberty to file a title suit too if they claim that the plot of land on which the school building stands belongs to them.

Daylight robbery by men in uniform.

Editor,

KI am writing to enlighten the general public about the illegality of money collection by police from truck drivers and to draw the attention of the DGP, Meghalaya and the Police Department (Home) for taking appropriate action against the extortionists in uniforms. The Police stations and Police outposts in Jaintia Hills eg. Ummulong O.P, Phramer, Lad Rymbai , Khliehriat, etc. are engaging in massive extortion from truck drivers day and night. If one happens to cross through those police stations, one will experience total traffic jam with vehicles queuing up waiting their turn to be extorted by policemen. As each truck passes those stations, the collection is carried out by policemen in uniform and in some stations by police in civil dress. The extortion by these men in uniform is so daring and visible to every passer-by but for the reasons best known, the concerned Superintendent of Police has not taken any action to stop such extortion which is a social menace. We don’t see such extortion by police during our daily routine journey from Shillong (East Khasi Hill) to Byrnihat (Ri-Bhoi, District)

As a responsible citizen I fervently appeal to the concerned SPs of Jaintia Hills (East & West) to act promptly and deal firmly with their wayward personnel manning the outposts and police stations. Further with a new Governor of Meghalaya to be sworn in soon we hope he will direct the Police Department to stop all illegalities committed by Police. I also request the media to report the crimes committed by police so that the menace is stopped.

Yours etc.

A concerned citizen of Meghalaya

Sec 144 in Nongstoin

Editor

It was good to read that section 144 CrPC is imposed by the Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills to prevent coal mining in the district. What is confusing is how will it be imposed. There is influx of labour in the area. One only has to be present on market days to see what is going on. It seems nobody has respect for the law. If not imposed properly it will lead to massive corruption.

Yours etc.,
