Meet on Sixth Schedule today

SHILLONG: On the eve of the all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on the issue of amendment to the Sixth Schedule, UDP has urged all the Opposition parties to speak in unison.
The rescheduled all-party meeting will discuss the amendment proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs to the Sixth Schedule in pursuance of the Tripartite Memorandum of Settlement with ANVC and ANVC-B, relating to increase in the number of seats in the Autonomous District Councils of the State and modalities for selection of nominated members.
“We need to demonstrate unanimity since this is a very critical issue,” UDP general secretary Allantry F Dkhar told newsmen after a meeting of the Opposition parties held here on Monday.
The meeting was attended by the leaders of UDP, HSPDP, NPP and KHNAM.
“We will attend tomorrow’s meeting to find out the State Government’s stand on this issue,” Dkhar said. The UDP general secretary said that his party would seek a clarification from the Government on the change the agenda of this rescheduled meeting.
It may be mentioned that the agenda of the meeting scheduled for January 16 (which was later deferred to January 20) had stated that the meeting would discuss proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule vis-à-vis traditional institutions of Meghalaya.
