Margao: Royal Wahingdoh capitalised on a defensive error as they got the better of Salgaocar FC by a solitary goal to score their second consecutive win in the Hero I-League at Nehru Stadium here on Friday.
Royal Wahingdoh scored the all-important goal in the seventh minute through Jackichand Singh from a misunderstanding between Salgaocar keeper Subrata Paul and defender Augustin Fernandes.
Royal Wahinghdoh have now collected six points from two matches while Salgaocar, who suffered their first defeat, have one point from two games.
Salgaocar started off well and controlled the proceedings in both the sessions with Douhou Pierre spearheading the attack with delightful passes that beat the rival defense on a number of occasions.
But, Clifton Dias, Bikash Jairu and Gilbert Oliveira either failed to get past the rival keeper Nikhil Bernard or shot off the target.
The visitors, who had a dream start in the league by beating Shillong Lajong, were subdued on Friday as they were not given any liberty by the rival midfield who cut off their supply line.
However, it was a misunderstanding between defender Fernandes and Paul who failed to intercept the long ball from Densill Theobald and Jackichand Singh, who was lurking around inside the box, pounced on the loose ball and shot home.
Undeterred by the early set back, Salgaocar kept on attacking and had three close chances.
But first, a combined move between Douhou Pierre and Gilbert Oliveira from the middle put Clifton Dias in the clear but he shot wide off the mark in the 17th minute.
Two minutes latter, Bikash Jairu had an open chance to equalise but instead he shot wide off the target after he was set up by Pierre.
The home team kept on the pressure with steady flow of passes but failed to find the equaliser as Fernandes and Gurjinder Kumar failed to utilise the chances that came their way.
The visitors too came up with counter moves and had two chances to increase the lead but Salgaocar keeper Paul did well to make a diving save off Bekay Bewar and Densill Theobald.
It was not Salgaocar’s day as woodwork came into their way as Pierre’s attempt at the goal hit the cross bar in the second half. (PTI)
