SHILLONG: The Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai Mawroh kicked off its year-long platinum jubilee celebrations during a function in the locality here on Saturday.
The Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai Mawroh came into existence in 1940 with (Late) Besingh Lyngdoh Nongpiur as its Rangbah Shnong. Once a locality with just 24 houses and without proper electricity supply, roads, water supply etc., Mawlai Mawroh, now shelters over 1000 households and has grown in many spheres.
Recalling the days of yore, former Rangbah Shnong of the locality, Tennyson Kharkongor said it was a tough ask back then for the Dorbar to ensure that its people are provided with the basic amenities besides being fairly governed.
Lauding the contributions made by the forerunners of the locality on the occasion, Information and Public Relations Minister AL Hek said that the “strength and vision of upholding real democracy by the leaders of this locality is an example worth replicating.”
Calling upon the residents of the locality to uphold unity, Hek said, “A unified and determined section of people can bring about massive change in the society. If the first residents of this locality had not unified and stuck together through various hurdles the identity of the locality would have been erased long back.”
Stressing on the same lines, Mawlai legislator, Embhah Syiemlieh praised the first residents for their courage and determination.
Meanwhile, a former secretary of the Dorbar Shnong also recalled the events that led to the gradual transformation of the locality.
“The Pope’s visit to the Golf Link in February 1986 came as a blessing for the locality as roads were widened and properly constructed. The construction of the VIP road from Mawroh to Umrynjah (Ri Bhoi) also helped,” Lyndem said.
