Construction to begin only after TB Hospital shifts to Umsawli

SHILLONG: Shillong’s dream of having its own medical college is still a long way from being fulfilled since construction work is yet to begin on the ambitious project.
It is highly unlikely that the Shillong medical College which is set to enroll the first batch of MBBS students in 2017 would be completed by that time.
Speaking to media persons here on Friday, Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek lamented that construction of the Shillong Medical College at Jhalupara would begin only after the new TB Hospital at Umsawli is ready.
He, however, stated with confidence that the Umsawli project was making good progress and would be completed by its 2015 deadline.
The State Government has inked a concessionaire agreement with Kolkata-based KPC Group for construction of the Shillong Medical College under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) mode on a plot of land measuring 23.8 acres.
The proposed medical college is expected to cater to over 2 lakh patients every year.
With regards to construction of the Tura Medical College, the minister informed that the Government has appointed Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd (TCIL), a government undertaking to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project. He also informed that the Government had already acquired the land for the Tura project.
The proposed Tura Medical College is set to be constructed on a plot of land measuring 99 acres and will have a capacity to cater to 500 patients, besides accommodating 100 MBBS students.
