SHILLONG: In the wake of frequent litigation faced by newspapers, the editors of various dailies of Meghalaya met here on Friday to find out ways to deal with the problem.
In the meeting convened by Meghalaya Editors and Publishers’ Association (MEPA), it was observed that editors and publishers were dragged to courts unnecessarily even on frivolous grounds by litigants (plaintiffs).
Instead of devoting and concentrating on the day-to-day journalistic works, editors are busy attending court cases filed by various parties, the meeting observed.
In this context, the editors appealed to members of the public (readers) including government agencies who are aggrieved, hurt or offended by any news report, writings or views expressed in any print or electronic media, to first send in their rejoinder or sort out the grievances with the editors of the media concerned or even approach the Press Council of India, for quicker redressal before going to court to avoid the obvious litigation entanglements.
The MEPA will also organise intensive seminars on Press Laws to be addressed by experts from the Press Council of India and by experts on Media Laws in immediate future.
