Police to install 30 CCTVs in capital, 10 in Tura in two weeks
SHILLONG: The installation work for CCTV cameras in Shillong would be completed within two weeks.
Sources from Meghalaya Police on Monday informed that they have received all the cameras which are to be installed in thirty locations of Shillong under the first phase.
Explaining the delay behind implementation of the much-needed project, the sources said that the cameras and equipment needed round-the-clock power supply and the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has started the work from Monday after conducting its survey.
The ongoing work for supply of power to the CCTVs would be completed in two weeks’ time, the sources confirmed.
The Meghalaya Home department has also directed that CCTVs should be installed in Shillong and Tura within two weeks.
The cameras are being installed in Shillong under the “Safe Secure Shillong” scheme and in the first phase, thirty cameras would be installed at strategic locations in Shillong whereas ten cameras would be installed in Tura.
The installation of CCTV cameras is expected to act as a deterrent for anti-social elements besides helping in crowd and traffic management.
The project is being installed by North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR) and the agency is contributing Rs. 1 crore whereas the State Government is funding Rs.3 crore for the project.
Under phase 2, CCTV cameras would be installed in 30 more location in Shillong and another 10 locations in Tura.
The State Police has been laying more emphasis on installation of CCTV cameras after miscreants burnt two people alive in the city during the ILP agitations that rocked the State in 2013.
