SHILLONG: Amid calls for reduction of fares of public transport vehicles in the wake of the decreasing prices of fuels, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Sanjay Goyal has said that “the entire situation needs to be reviewed” before coming to any decision.
“After reviewing the situation, the RTA will see if there is a need to reduce the taxi fares or further increase it since the last revision was done three to four years back,” Goyal said.
When contacted, Meghalaya Tourist Transporter’s Association (MTTA) general secretary Diganta Nath argued that the Association did not hike the fares when fuel prices were soaring. He, however, said that if the State Government reduces the various taxes levied on tourist taxis, the fares would definitely come down.
Meanwhile, the youth wing of Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has also expressed concern over the high fares which have not been reduced despite reduction in petrol and diesel prices.
