Local farmers felicitated

SHILLONG: Two local farmers– Morningstar War of Lawsohtun and Sorendro Khongsit of Upper Shillong– were honoured for their efforts in collection and preservation of local indigenous plant germ plasm of orchid and bamboo species respectively.
The farmers were honoured during an awareness-cum-training programme on Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act, 2001 conducted at Integrated Agriculture Training Centre, Upper Shillong on Wednesday.
The programme organised jointly by the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Right Authority, Government of India and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, East Khasi Hills, was attended by farmers from a number of villages of East Khasi Hills and officers from the Agriculture Department.
The objective of the programme was to enhance the knowledge of the officials and farmers regarding the need to register the plant varieties and also the rights that the farmers have over their indigenous varieties.
