SHILLONG: As many as 800 street lights in the city are not working and need to be repaired or replaced urgently.
Informing this, Principal Secretary, Urban Affairs, P. Naik said that MeECL has been asked to repair or change such street lights.
Naik also clarified that the Urban Affairs department has no dues to be paid to the MeECL at the moment.
A majority of the dysfunctional street lights are located in GS Road, Motphran, Laitumkhrah and Rilbong.
Even the National Highways 40 and 44, which pass through the heart of the city, fare no better as far as street lights are concerned.
While the main commercial hub of the city – Khyndailad – is bathed in light after sunset certain parts of the city remain under the spell of darkness.
