SHILLONG: Within two weeks of his burial, the body of former Patharkhmah police outpost in-charge Pearlystone Joshua Marbaniang, who died under mysterious circumstances, was exhumed for the second autopsy on Friday.
Marbaniang was found lying inside his official quarter in a pool of blood on the night of January 24 after he had detained 32 coal laden trucks. A day after the incident, an autopsy was conducted at the Nongpoh Civil Hospital.
However, the relatives, suspecting some ‘foul play’, demanded an independent inquiry since they were not convinced to the suicide theory put forward by police.
Following pressure from the relatives and other social organisations, the State Government finally ordered an inquiry by the State Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SP (City) Vivek Syiem even as the police finally registered a murder case on the death of Marbaniang.
The second autopsy was conducted by a team of doctors from NEIGRHIMS in the presence of the magistrates and the police.
Finally, the autopsy was conducted with the police cordoning a portion of the cemetery.
While addressing newsmen here on Friday, Syiem said that the SIT had asked for the second autopsy since they were some discrepancies in the medical of the Patharkhmah CHC and the autopsy report of the Nongpoh Civil Hospital.
“We have also sought the second autopsy since we will go deep into the matter to find out the actual cause of death,” Syiem said.
It may be mentioned that there were discrepancies in medical examination and the post-mortem report of Marbaniang on the nature of wounds and the timing of his death.
He also informed that the doctors have collected the necessary samples which are required.
“We will send these samples to the Forensic Science Laboratory for examination,” Syiem said.
