SHILLONG: On his maiden visit to Meghalaya, Union Minister for Science and Technology, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, advocated the need to think afresh as far as research in the medical field is concerned.
“We need to re-orient our thinking in the field of research. As long as what we do in the laboratory and what we publish in the journal has no practical benefits for the mankind in terms of perceptible and medical difference that kind of research only have a theoretical meaning,” the Union Minister said while addressing students and others at NEIGRIHMS here on Wednesday.
He also called upon the new generation to “think out of the box” to bring a change in the thinking process in the field of medical research.
“The time for routing and casual approach is over. We have continued to run our country with this casual routine approach for over 65 years now. Now the country is looking upon its younger generation (to bring about the change),” he said.
He said that India has an edge as far as achieving the objective is concerned since the country has a large pool of youngsters.
Recalling the glorious past of the country, he said that whatever research is happening across the globe today is being given by India.
“All research done by great Indian scientists right since the 1st century was translated to various other languages at a later stage… We taught plastic surgery to the rest to the world,” Dr Vardhan said.
He also said that India has to show the world a path is the health sector that is worth emulating.
Meanwhile, speaking on the role of doctors, the Union Minister stated that a successful doctor is one who presents himself to the community and initiates the process of identification and control of diseases and strengthens the health education among the nurses.
