NEHU scholars stage protest over irregular fellowship

SHILLONG: Around 200 research scholars from the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) began an indefinite demonstration on the university campus that began on Wednesday to express solidarity with the nationwide protest by the Research Scholars of India (RSI) vis-à-vis the irregular disbursal of monthly fellowship, besides other grievances.
Disappointed with the adamant attitude and negligence of the government in resolving their problems, the scholars from universities across the country under the banner of RSI threatened to call an indefinite nation-wide protest from Wednesday and called upon all the scientists, scholars and faculty to support the cause.
Some of their grievances include irregular dispersal of monthly fellowship, no revision of fellowship based on the inflation, no coordination and parity among the funding agencies in hike, no slab implementation from JRF to SRF and SRF to RF, no proper hike for Non-NET,
Non-GATE, Project students, no proper amount of fellowship in professional courses, no facilities to do research in the Universities, slashing down the number of fellowships by cutting the fund, difficulty in getting jobs after Ph.D. and post doc. Studies and no transparency and no national platform to appoint scientists and faculty.
Besides this, the RSI also demanded the government to take lifelong responsibility for medication of researchers working in nuclear, chemical and other hazardous fields besides asking the government to ensure that effective measures are taken to prevent all kinds of corruption.
