Mizoram schools to start classes at 8 am
Aizawl: Primary to higher secondary schools in Mizoram would begin classes at 8 am from the next academic session beginning in April. The decision was taken in a meeting of the council of ministers chaired by the Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla Wednesday evening. Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) or Mizo Students Federation welcomed the decision while Mizo Students Union (MSU) opposed it on the ground that it would be too early for young students and would disturb the daily activities of not only students but also the whole society. The MZP expressed happiness over the decision saying that the people of Mizoram would wake up early and help avail daylight savings. (PTI)
Bomb explodes injuring seven persons in Manipur
Imphal: Seven persons, including four police personnel, were injured when a bomb exploded at Manipur main market complex hereWednesday evening, police said. A team of from nearby city police office went to Samu Makhong area in the market complex after receiving reports that a bomb had been planted in the market. They found a bag containing a bomb-like object there and when a constable tried to hurl it in the adjoining Nambul river it exploded injuring four police personnel and three civilians, the police said. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the incident. (PTI)
Newly elected Congress MLA takes oath
Itanagar: Newly-elected Congress MLA from Liromoba constituency Nyamar Karbak on Thursday took oath as the member of the state Assembly, in presence of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, several ministers, MLAs besides high ranking officials. Speaker Nabam Rebia administered the oath of office and secrecy to Karbak at the Nokmey Namati Hall of the Assembly secretariat at Naharlagun. Karbak won the bye-poll held on February 13 last by a margin of 119 votes defeating his nearest rival Bai Gadi of the BJP. Bye-election to the constituency was necessitated following sudden demise of former Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin at a Gurgaon hospital on November 30 last year. (PTI)
Nagaland braces to fight swine flu virus
Kohima: Following the report of a confirmed case of swine flu (H1N1) virus in Nagaland, State Health Department has asserted that it has been fully prepared for tackling the virus. The department has already placed orders for medicine from the Centre to counter H1N1 flu, State Nodal Officer for Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), Dr Tiasunup Pongener, said. The IDSP which has district surveillance units in all the 11 districts and a state unit in Kohima are all working 24 hours for the last two weeks, after receiving information regarding H1N1, he said. Confirming the first case of H1N1 flu detected in Nagaland on February 16 last, Dr Tiasunup disclosed that the condition of the patient has improved and would be discharged in a couple of days after giving proper counseling.
