SHILLONG: The Police advisory asking shopkeepers of the city to install CCTV cameras in front of their shops seems to have fallen on deaf ears as only a few have adhered to the call so far.
The State Police had issued the advisory after three people were burnt alive during the ILP agitation in the city in 2013.
Speaking to media persons recently, East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang said that the response of the shopkeepers has been below expectation.
He added that the traders who are willing to install CCTV cameras can approach the police for any technical knowhow on the installation of the cameras.
So far, only a few shopkeepers in Khyndailad and Iewduh have installed CCTV cameras in front of their shops.
Meanwhile, the 28 CCTV cameras installed by the police in different locations across the city are expected to start functioning in a couple of weeks’ time.
Kharkrang said that the cameras are helping police in traffic management besides acting as a deterrent for anti-social elements.
In fact, it was recently observed at Khyndailad that a miscreant was about to assault a hawker but stopped short of it as he was cautioned by another person about the data being recorded in the cameras located in the commercial centre.
