Karnataka health minister escapes unhurt as car falls into gorge
Mangaluru: Karnataka Health Minister and local MLA U T Khader escaped unhurt when his car fell into a 15-feet deep gorge in the wee hours on Monday, police said. Khader’s car fell into a gorge at Kalkatta, 15 kms from here around 12.45 AM when the driver apparently lost control over the vehicle, police said. The Minister and his personal assistant, who were returning to the city after taking part in a programme in Manjanady near here, escaped unhurt while the driver was admitted to a private hospital with minor injuries. The car was badly damaged and was lifted from the gorge using a crane. Khader later told reporters that he was fine and did not make any changes in his programme for the day. (PTI)
Two women held for smuggling gold worth about Rs one crore
New Delhi: Two women have been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs one crore at international airport here in separate incidents. “A woman was intercepted by customs officials after her arrival from Hongkong here yesterday(Sunday). On personal search, eight pieces of gold bar weighing 2.7 kgs were recovered,” a press release issued today by the customs said. The value of the gold seized from the woman, who hails from neighbouring Ghaziabad, is assessed to be Rs 68.51 lakh, it said. Another woman was intercepted by the customs after her arrival from Dubai Sunday. On detailed examination of her baggage, ten pieces of gold bars weighing 1.1 kg (valuing about Rs 29.08 lakh) were recovered, the release said. Both the woman passengers were arrested and the gold, valuing Rs 97.59 lakh was seized, it said. (PTI)
MP turns photographer for fellow members
New Delhi: A BJP member on Monday turned into a photographer in the Lok Sabha as some of his fellow members posed for him to click pictures. As soon as the House adjourned for the day after tabling of President Pranab Mukherjee’s address, nine BJP women members were seen requesting Udit Raj to click their group picture using a cellphone. Udit Raj, member from Delhi, obliged and clicked several pictures of his colleagues who included Pankaja Munde, Priyanka Rawat, Savitri Phule and Riti Pathak. (PTI)
