Zoramthanga on peace intiative in Myanmarese insurgent groups

Aizawl:  Former Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga left for Bangkok to broker peace with representatives of 17 Myanmarese ethnic insurgent groups.
Zoramthanga, who arrived at Kolkata from Aizawl on Thursday told PTI here over phone that he would be in Bangkok from Friday to Sunday, where he would be holding talks with a delegation representing ethnic groups which included the Kachin, Karen, Chin, Wa and Arakanese.
He said he would be arriving at Yangon from Bangkok on Monday where he would hold talks with the Myanmarese ministers who were involved in the peace deal with the ethnic rebels.
“I would be leaving for Kolkata on next Friday and return to Aizawl on Saturday,” he said, adding, he would not go to Delhi this time.
Zoramthanga had in January met both the Myanmarese leaders and ethnic group leaders in Yangon and Bangkok respectively.
He was also involved in the peace initiative between the Centre and ethnic Mizo militant groups in Manipur, including the Paite, Hmar and Kuki groups.
The former leader of the erstwhile underground Mizo National Front (MNF) said he was not directly involved in the peace talks but has been acting as a go-between to ensure mutual trust.
He, while being the chief minister, had successfully brought the Centre and the NSCN (I-M) to the negotiating table after meeting top NSCN leadership,L including its chairman Isaac Chishi Swu and general secretary Thuingalen Muivah in Bangkok. (PTI)
