TURA: Following allegation by the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) that it had remained inactive despite an appeal to intervene made by the wife of one of the five victims who were brutally murdered recently by villagers of Mrigre under Rongram Block, the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has strongly refuted the accusations and denied having received any kind of intimation prior to the killings.
“It was only on Feb 5 that the wife of David Maxnear informed us of the matter. Her husband was murdered on Jan 8 nearly a month before. We are trying our best to provide justice as well as compensation to the bereaved family members,” GSU vice president Robert Ch Momin said in a statement on Monday.
The GSU has also written a letter to the BDO of Rongram C&RD Block urging him to speed up the inquiry process and to arrest all those involved in the heinous act.
“The union demands that adequate compensation is given to the surviving family members as he was the only bread earner in the family,” it said while also urging the district administration and the state government to impart general awareness especially in villages about such superstitions prevailing in the society.
