SHILLONG: Former legislator P.M. Syiem has urged Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to ensure that the 35,670 illegal immigrants, who were declared absconders in Assam, do not find place in the Meghalaya electoral rolls.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Syiem said that the Assam government had informed the Assam Assembly that around 35,670 illegal immigrants which were declared absconders by the court were missing) “This matter is very serious to Meghalaya as a close neighbour and easy access of these absconders to Meghalaya cannot be ruled out.
“As a concerned citizen, I urge you to use the state machineries to thwart any attempt of these absconders to register their names in the electoral rolls, as they may be working in villages, small factories, confirming themselves as Indian citizens,” Syiem said.
Syiem also asked the Chief Minister to get the names of those absconders from Assam government and alert the State Election Commission, Dorbar Shnong, builders, contractors and other agencies to cross check in case they have sneaked into Meghalaya through unfair means.
