Junior Engineer found dead inside jeep in Mizoram
Aizawl:A Junior Engineer (JE) working under the Mizoram Power and Electricity department was found dead inside his jeep near Sailam village on the road between Aizawl and south Mizoram’s Lunglei town on Friday. T. Lalthanzama, working at Lunglei, was travelling alone in his new jeep from Aizawl to Lunglei on Wednesday night but did not arrive in Lunglei the next day and was declared as missing, a police official said. The jeep and his body was found in an orchard near Sailam where he apparently met with an accident by running off the road, the official said. The jeep was impounded and the body sent for autopsy. Guv, CM extends Holi greetings
IItanagar:Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma has extended festival greetings and good wishes to people of the state on the joyous occasion of Holi. In his message, the Governor said the festival of Holi marks the arrival of spring and the myriad colours of Holi reflect the cultural diversity and heritage. The Governor wished that the festival of colours strengthens faith in the cherished traditional values and promote oneness, harmony and the good of all. In a separate message, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki also conveyed best wishes to the people on the auspicious occasion of Holi, the festival of colours. (UNI)
HPC(D) ultras fire at police outpost
Aizawl:Suspected members of the Manipur- based Hmar People’s Convention (Democrats) fired at a police outpost in Khawlian along the Mizoram-Manipur border last night. Deputy Inspector General of Police, LT Hrangchal, said the militants fired several rounds at the police outpost and fled as the policemen retaliated. There was no casualty or injuries as a result of the firing, which lasted for about 10 minutes, said Hrangchal. “We had prior information that HPC(D) militants were coming to Khawlian village to create trouble and had instructed the police there to beef up security and intensify patrolling,” he said. The enhanced security foiled the ploy of the insurgents and, apparently in frustration, they fired upon the police post from a distance, he added. (PTI)
Teenaged girl found dead in mysterious circumstances
Guwahati:A teenaged girl was found hanging from the ceiling of her house in Diju area of Assam’s North Lakhimpur district last afternoon, police said on Friday. Lakhimpur SP Brojen Sinha confirmed that the girl, studying in class X, was found hanging from the ceiling of her house last afternoon. The body was retrieved by the police and has been sent for post-mortem examination. ‘There is no apparent homicide sign of injury on the body or marks of rape. But we are enquiring all angles and the cause of death or if any rape had happened prior to it, will be known after the inquest,’ Mr Sinha said. Report of a boy visiting the victim before her death has been received by the police and all details were being probed. ‘It is too early to say if it was a case of suicide or homicide,’ the SP added.(UNI)
Miscreant arrested with arms
Haflong:One miscreant was arrested with arms from Jatinga railway station in Dima Hasao district, police said on Friday. Three armed miscreants entered the railway station and threatened two railway officers on duty and fired one round from their 12 bore rifle on Thursday. The railway police personnel overpowered one of them, while the rest managed to escape, the police said. Later, the RPF personnel handed over the apprehended youth to Haflong police along with one live cartridge of 12 bore rifle and one cache cover recovered from the scene. The police have launched an operation in the area to nab the two escaped miscreants and investigation is on into the incident. (PTI)
Chapchar Kut celebrated in Mizoram
Aizawl:Chapchar Kut, the most important traditional festival of the Mizos was observed across Mizoram on Friday with the biggest celebration being held at the Assam Rifles ground here. Exuberant performers danced to the tune of typical Mizo songs at the festival celebrations while traditional dances like Cheraw, Sarlamkai and mass dance called ‘Chai’ were performed by different cultural troupes. Ethnic Mizos from neighbouring states and countries like Myanmar and Bangladesh also participated in the celebrations in Aizawl where Taiwan’s senior diplomat, foreigners and domestic tourists from different states also took part. Traditional costume parade, exhibit of Mizo dresses through the years was also held. State Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla was the ‘Kut Pa’ or father of the festival while Art and Culture Minister R Romawia and Chung Kwan Tien, senior diplomat of Taiwan were the ‘host’ and guest of honour respectively. Woman suspected of suffering from swine flu in Manipur
Impha:A 35-year-old woman has been suspected of suffering from swine flu. After reports of swine flu reaching Nagaland reached Manipur there was fear of swine flu reaching Manipur. The woman who came to Shija hospital on Feb 28 last was in a serious condition and her blood samples were sent outside the state for testing. The reports indicated positive cases of swine flu though the state government has not officially announced the results. It will be the first case of swine flu in the state. Health officials and doctors were monitoring the matter round the clock. (UNI)
Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao scheme launched in Mizoram
Aizawl:A special campaign for girls called Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao (Save Girl Child-Educate Girl Child) was launched in Saiha district in southern Mizoram on Friday. R T Zachono, chief executive member of Maraland autonomous district council launched the scheme by flagging off medical teams that will cover the rural area.Saiha district in Mizoram was selected among 100 districts across India for the national programme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22 this year. The scheme primarily aims to tackle the dwindling number of girls due to foeticide.Zachono said Saiha has been selected not due to female foeticide but due to the high incidents of infant mortality rate.(UNI)
