JOWAI: West Jaintia Hills Police on Friday seized as many as 70 pieces of GI pipes belonging to the PHE Department from a hardware shop at Mooralong, Jowai, owned by one Nujorki Sungoh.
The illegal sale of PHE pipes was first detected by members of the Ri Jaintia Youth Federation (RJYF), HNYF(ER) and the Jaintia Students’ Movement, who later reported the matter to the police.
“We received information about the illegal sale of PHE pipes in this shop. We are against such corrupt practices,” RJYF president Ram Rymbai said.
However, the shop owner claimed that the pipes belonged to a PHE contractor.
It may be mentioned here that this was not the first time such illegal practice was detected in the PHE Department. In August, 2011 a truck full of CI pipes was detected from Ummulong while it was on its way to Shillong.
