SHILLONG: Concerned over the ongoing political stalemate in the KHADC, the Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP) has called for introduction of anti-defection law in the State.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, MDP joint secretary, Wankitbok Pohshna said that frequent attempts of the elected representatives to topple the ruling council has maligned the image of the institution and disrupted its smooth functioning.
In view of this trend, the party urged the State Government to immediately invoke the anti-defection law in all the three district councils of the State.
According to MDP, since the election held in 2014 the council had 2 CEMs, and keeping in mind the past events, unless the anti-defection rule is applied, many more CEMs will assume charge and with the passage of time the council’s term would be over.
The MDP further added, “The recent High Court ruling on the functions of the Rangbah Shnong is one of the issues that the council should have addressed over the years; however, since its inception the council was silent on the issue…Also, the question is what took the council so long to make the Village Administration Bill when the council was there for the last 62 years.”
