Couple drown in river in Rajasthan

Bundi:A young couple drowned in Meiz river here while attempting to save two minor children, police said on Saturday. The incident happened on Friday in Rebarpura village under Deikheda police station area of the district. Ramcharan Harijan (25) with his wife Rekha (21) had come to his in-laws’ house on Thursday for Holi celebration, said Station House Officer (SHO) of Daikheda police station Arvind Sharma. After playing Holi, Ramcharan, his wife Rekha, their son Bholashanker, 11 and Rekha’s younger brother Rahul, 12 went to Meiz river yesterday afternoon for a bath, he said. But while bathing the two minors slipped into the river following which the couple jumped into water to save them, the SHO said. However, the couple drowned while the two children were rescued by a local who was taking bath in the river, he said. (PTI)

2 shot dead, 3 injured over land dispute

Gopalganj:Armed miscreants shot dead two persons and seriously injured three others in Gopalganj district of Bihar during a land-related quarrel between two groups on Saturday, the police said. Gopalganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Anil Kumar Singh said the clash took place at Baijulapur village under Baikunthpur police station in the district. The deceased have been identified as Shrish Rai (55) and Rajendra Raj (40). Three others were injured in the incident and undergoing treatment. “The firing happened between two groups of people during an altercation over a pending land dispute. One person died from each of the groups. We have arrested one named Badal Rai. An FIR has also been lodged,” Singh said. (PTI)

Infant killed, 17 injured in road mishap

Jalpaiguri:An infant was killed and 17 people were injured, five of them critically in a road mishap on NH 31 at Dhupguri in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Saturday. Police said the victims, who included the driver and the parents of the infant were travelling by a maxi taxi when it collided head on against a loaded truck. The taxi was on way to Dhupguri and the truck was moving in the opposite direction to Alipurduar, the police said. The injured were rushed to the district hospital and the critically injured were referred to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital at Siliguri, the police added. (PTI)

Drug peddler arrested with 450 grams of cannabis in J-K

Kathua:Police has arrested a drug peddler and recovered 450 grams of cannabis from him in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. Police intercepted one Rohit Singh alias Sonu riding on a motorcycle at Londi More in Hiranagar area here yesterday, police officials said. During frisking, 450 grams of cannabis were recovered from his possession, they said, adding the contraband was seized and the accused arrested. A case under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused and further investigation is on, they said. (PTI)

Two injured after coming in contact with live electric wire

Chapra:Two persons were injured, one of them seriously, in a village in Saran district of Bihar, when they came in contact with 11,000 KV electricity supply line, which had fallen on the ground, the police said on Saturday. Police officials said the incident occurred at Bharhopur village in the district and the injured have been identified as Satesh Kumar Yadav and Rajvanshi Singh. Ekma Station House Officer (SHO) Sri Charan said, “The high-tension electricity supply line had fallen on the street last evening and the two injured came in contact with it while walking there. The two suffered burn injuries.” Charan said the injured were first taken to Ekma Primary Health Centre (PHC) and later to Chapra Sadar Hospital for treatment. Both are said to be out of danger.(PTI)
