Nokma to file case in High Court against son’s killers
SHILLONG: Abal M Sangma, Nokma of Oragitok village under Rongram C&RD Block of West Garo Hills and father of deceased Sengbath Marak, who was allegedly shot dead on the morning of March 4, is contemplating to file a case against West Garo Hills Circle Inspector Bitching N Marak and surrendered GNLA cadre Mingran T Sangma for allegedly killing his son.
Sengbath was allegedly shot dead by Mingran in the presence of the Circle Inspector on the morning of March 4.
“We will file a case before the High Court of Meghalaya against the Circle Inspector and the surrendered GNLA cadre,” Sangma said while talking to newsmen here on Monday.
He also said that he will file an FIR at Tura PS demanding the arrest of those who were involved in killing his son.
The Nokma observed that they had no right to take away the life of his son even if he was guilty of being an over ground worker of the GNLA. “The police should have arrested him if he had committed any crime,” Sangma said.
Meanwhile, one of the eyewitnesses of the incident disclosed that the police team led by the Circle Inspector and the surrendered GNLA cadre had come to Nok Pante (a place where Garo bachelors are stay) in search of Sengbath.
“During the search, the Circle Inspector even threatened that he will threw a grenade inside the house if he (Sengbath) does not come out,” said Samson A. Sangma, who was also staying in Nok Pante.
Samson said that after he came out of his room, the police asked Sengbath to run after which the surrendered GNLA cadre shot on his leg and he collapsed on the ground.
“After this, the Circle Inspector and the surrendered GNLA cadre shot Sengbath which finally led to his death,” Samson revealed.
He also revealed that the police conducted a search of the body of Sengbath and claimed to have recovered a 7.65 pistol with two live rounds, two magazines, three GNLA demand notes and a detonator from the encounter site.
“This is a creation of the police to frame Sengbath. We knew that he was not involved with any militant group since we were staying together in the same place,” the eyewitness said.
Another eyewitness, Krengstone Ch Marak, also said that the whole village knew that Sengbath was innocent.
“This is a dirty ploy of the police. We do not accept police claims that he was involved with any militant group,” the eyewitness said, while stating that they had come out in the open to speak to the media since they did not want police to take away the lives of any more innocent villagers.
“This will be the last time that this kind of incident takes place in the village,” Marak, a close friend of Sengbath, said.
