Accurate voters’ list: UDP’s dilemma

SHILLONG: UDP has failed to appoint booth level agents (BLAs) in all polling stations to assist the booth level officers in identification of genuine voters and dubious voters within polling stations.
Ironically it was UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh who had brought a resolution in the Assembly last week on the need to discourage enrolment of dubious voters in the electoral roll of the state.
As per the official list, while the Congress had appointed as many as 140 BLAs , HSPDP had appointed 2.
Other than UDP, the political parties which did not appoint the BLAs include NPP, KHNAM, NCP, BJP and CPI.
When contacted, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) P Naik said on Sunday that it is the duty of all the citizens in the state to ensure that there is accurate electoral rolls in State.
He said all genuine voters should be included in the electoral roll.
The Chief Electoral Officer said that a transparent process is being adopted to ensure that no dubious voters get enrolled in the electoral rolls.
As per norm, any person who is aggrieved with the order of the Electoral Registration Officer for inclusion or deletion of names in the electoral roll, can file an appeal before the concerned district magistrate and before the Chief Electoral Officer against the order of the district  magistrate.
As per the direction of the Election Commission of India, no person will be entitled to be registered in the electoral roll of two states, and two constituencies. Moreover, a voter of the constituency cannot register his name more than once in the same constituency.
