CCTV installation work to be completed this week

SHILLONG: The ongoing work for installation of CCTV cameras in 28 locations of the city is set to be completed within this week.
Informing this here on Monday, sources from the police department said the installation work has been finished in 25 locations and the work in the remaining locations would be finished by this week.
The police sources also informed that the CCTV cameras are fitted with night vision and can take videos in semi-darkness. A monitoring room has been set up at the Sadar Police Station.
The CCTV cameras are being installed as part of the Safe Secure Shillong project Phase-I.
Under the second phase of the project, the State Police is planning to integrate CCTV data from restaurants, shopping malls and other places.
The initiative is expected to go a long way in improving the law and order scenario in the city.
Demand for improved SBI services in Nongstoin

NONGSTOIN: The Synjuk Sengbhalang West Khasi Hills consisting of Western Youth Federation, Western Youth Welfare Council, Western People Movement, West Khasi Student Union, West Khasi National Youth Front and Western Youth People Development Organization on Monday met the Chief Manager of SBI Nongstoin Branch demanding improvement of services in the bank.
General secretary of the Synjuk, Donald Nongsiang, informed that they placed the demand for repair of the passbook updating machine which had not been functioning for almost a year, improvement of the token number machine and the ATM machine which did not function properly creating lot of difficulties for the public.
The Synjuk also demanded another ATM booth at the SBI Nongstoin Branch in order to meet the growing need of the public.
The SBI official assured to take initiatives on the matter.
NECCC rallies behind ex-PM Manmohan Singh

SHILLONG: An emergency meeting of the North East Congress Co-ordination Committee (NECCC) held under the chairmanship of D.D. Lapang at the residence of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in Guwahati on Saturday unanimously pledged full faith and confidence in the honesty, sincerity, integrity and patriotism of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is widely acclaimed for his clean image both in India and the world as a whole.
The NECC said that during his tenure, Singh steered the nation to the pinnacle of glory through economic reforms. “It is deplorable that Manmohan Singh has been dragged in to uncalled for controversy causing personal harassment, which appears to be politically motivated,” the NECCC said.
The meeting also expressed appreciation for AICC president Sonia Gandhi for her assured support to Singh.
Purno condemns nun’s rape in West Bengal

SHILLONG: Lok Sabha member from Tura P.A. Sangma has condemned the gang rape of a 71-year-old nun at a convent school at Ranaghat in West Bengal.
The gang rape by masked robbers late Friday is the latest in a series of high-profile sexual assaults in India that have intensified outrage over the growing levels of violence against women.
The nun was attacked and gang raped after the robbers ransacked the convent school at Ranaghat, 70 km from Kolkata, and stole cash and other items.
Sangma urged the West Bengal government to bring the culprits to book so that justice can be granted to the victim at the earliest.
Four held for drinking, creating nuisance

SHILLONG: Police arrested four persons for drinking inside a local taxi (ML-04-9289), creating nuisance and disturbing public peace at Police Bazar at around 1:45 am on March 14. The four persons were identified as Livingson Laloo, Benson Lyngdoh, Maxwell Kharkongor and Rich Mynsong.
In another case, one person from the Director General of Assam Rifles (DGAR) Laitkor identified as T.K. Shajuman allegedly abused and made aggressive gestures towards a police mobile patrolling party near the MTC Bus Depot, Shillong at around 10:30 pm on March 14.
Juvenile held for molesting 14-year-old minor

SHILLONG: Police arrested a 15-year-old juvenile on charge of sexually assaulting a fourteen-year-old girl in the city.
Police said that the incident happened on the night of March 13 at Dum Dum, Nongthymmai in the city.
In another incident, a twenty-year-old woman lodged a complaint that she had been raped by one Ioomy Shylla inside his vehicle near Lapangap village in West Jaintia Hills on March 13 around 8 pm.
Medical officer resists kidnap bid in Garo Hills

SHILLONG: A Medical and Health Officer of Babadam PHC in West Garo Hills reportedly resisted an abduction bid by unidentified miscreants on March 11, a delayed report said here on Monday.
According to police, the medical official lodged a complaint that on March 11 at around 11:30 pm, three unidentified miscreants arrived at her quarter and attempted to abduct her. However, when she raised an alarm the miscreants fled away.
Khasis, Pnars in Assam demand their rights

SHILLONG: The general conference of the Barak Valley Khasi Jaintia Welfare Organisation held on Saturday emphasized on constitutional protection of the Khasi-Pnar people living in various villages in the Barak Valley region of Assam.
The conference was attended by Morningstar Sumer, general secretary, North Eastern Indigenous Indian Mongolian Peoples’ Cultural Organisation along with Jones Ingti Kathar, coordinator of the organisation and former Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup and Karimganj districts of Assam, Rev. (Dr.) O.L. Snaitang, an eminent writer and historian, Amlarem MDC S. Mukhim and JYF president P Majaw, among others.
The speakers called upon the community to unite to fight collectively for their legitimate rights.
Kathar cited the case of militancy and said that extremism has created more problems rather than solving them, particularly in remote areas of Assam.
Rev. Snaitang cautioned the people to refrain from the lure of money and urged upon every individual to work for the welfare of the community and to keep away from temporary lucrative offer.
The conference highlighted the plight of around two lakh people from the Khasi and Pnar tribes residing in the three districts of Hailakandi, Karimganj and Cachar in Assam and mentioned that a memorandum had been placed before the Assam Government in 2012 demanding ST status for the Khasis and Pnars to enable them to avail better employment and educational opportunities in Assam.
Over ten thousand people attended the annual conference.
