The knockouts are upon us and fittingly the first quarterfinal looks the most exciting on paper. I would say South Africa holds the edge but definitely not by much. For a side that entered the tournament as one of the firm favourites, they have not had it easy, primarily because two of their important cogs have not fallen in place.
The outcome of the Sydney clash will largely depend on South Africa’s rhythm with the ball. Dale Steyn has not peaked thus far and it will not be a bad time for him to come good. During the last two seasons of the IPL, I have watched Steyn from close quarters and he is one of the most committed professionals I have come across. He usually lifts his game on the big day and could well be the reason in South Africa scripting their first knockout win in a World Cup.
The other issue surrounding South Africa is their opening partnership. To beat big teams consistently, the openers have to put their hands up to be counted. If they can get a decent start, the fire power in their middle order should carry them through.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka’s batting has been brilliant but their bowling has been a problem area. The availability of Rangana Herath will be crucial to their chances. Their best chance will lie in batting first and posting a competitive total. If the Sydney track stands true to reputation, then the Lankan spinners will have a say, and add to that the pressures of chasing in a knockout game.
Evenly matched sides in a beautiful venue, makes the perfect setting to usher in the business end of the tournament.
