Inability to arrest rape-accused cop: Opposition flays Govt

SHILLONG: The immovable properties of the rape accused police officer Nurul Islam, who is absconding, were attached by the Court of Additional District Magistrate (Judicial), West Garo Hills, Tura, and the chargesheet has been filed against the accused, Home Minister Roshan Warjri informed the House on Tuesday.
Replying to a question by James Sangma (NPP), the Home Minister said that earlier all the bank accounts of the police officer were frozen.
It was on March 2013 that Islam, who was the officer in charge of Ampati police station allegedly raped two minor sisters in the police station. Later on June 1, the officer was arrested, but he managed to escape the next day.
Raising the issue during the Question Hour, the Opposition criticized the Government for its inability to trace out the accused.
In a reply to a supplementary by James, the Home Minister said that the police last visited Assam in 2014 as part of investigation.
“It is not that the Government is giving up, but all out efforts are being taken to trace the culprit”, Warjri said. Paul Lyngdoh (UDP) wanted to know that since Islam is from Barpeta, Assam, whether a non-Meghalayan can be recruited in the State police.To this, the Home Minister said that the matter would be examined.
Opposition Leader Donkupar Roy said that there was a need to update the profile of the absconder policeman and the Government should also post his photograph in the website.
On the steps taken by the Government to trace out Islam, the Home Minister said a lookout notice was circulated to all the deputy commissioners, superintendents of police, registrars of Assam and Meghalaya, all district superintendents of police of India, Commandant CISF, L.G.B. International Airport Borjhar, Guwahati,General Manager, North East Frontier Railway, Maligaon, Guwahati, and Regional  Passport Officer, Dispur Assam.  It has also been published in newspapers of Meghalaya and Assam. Several reminders by W. T. message were also circulated to all superintendents of police of Meghalaya, Assam and the rest of India. Moreover, a special team led by an Inspector was sent to Guwahati, Bongaigaon, Barpeta in Assam to find out the whereabouts of the accused.
