SHILLONG, July 6: The High Court of Meghalaya on Monday directed the state government to submit data on cases registered under the NDPS Act in and around Police Bazar from January 2026 till date.
The direction came after the petitioner’s senior counsel informed the court of large-scale drug peddling in the area and urged immediate steps to curb the menace.
The State had filed an affidavit detailing anti-trafficking measures, including cases registered between January 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026, and the disposal of seized contraband.
The matter is listed for further hearing on August 3, 2026.
Police Bazar, Shillong’s principal commercial and tourism hub, has for years struggled with visible drug peddling and addicts loitering in public spaces.
The area attracts thousands of locals and tourists daily, yet the growing presence of drug users has led to increasing reports of harassment, theft, robbery and anti-social behaviour.
Bus shelters meant for commuters have turned into daytime resting spots for addicts, while pedestrians, both locals and tourists alike, are frequently approached for money, often believed to be for purchasing narcotics.
The Federation of Shillong Hotels recently petitioned the Superintendent of Police seeking immediate action, highlighting the adverse impact on safety and the area’s reputation.
Despite regular police deployment and periodic crackdowns, locals and business owners maintain there is a lack of sustained effort to clear the streets.
