President to visit Mizoram
Aizawl:President Pranab Mukherjee would be visiting Mizoram on April 9 and would leave the next day, an official statement said. Mukherjee, who will be on his maiden visit to the state, would be the Chief Guest at the ninth annual convocation of the Mizoram University, it said. A meeting of top officials chaired by state Chief Secretary Lalmalsawma chalked out the programme for the President. (PTI)
Mizoram plans to import piglets from England
Aizawl:Mizoram government is planning to purchase around 50 piglets from England for Rs 98,000 each, the state Assembly was informed today. Mizoram Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister C.Ngunlianchunga said the government intended to purchase pure breed large white Yorkshire and pure breed Landrace pigs. The piglets were of higher quality compared to the local breed in many respects, he said. Replying to a query of Lalruatkima of the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), the minister said the government had earlier planned to purchase piglets from Canada at the cost of Rs 1.15 lakh each. But the arrangement failed as the Centre refused to give security protocol in view of swine flu prevailing in that country. Pork is one of the most common meats consumed in Mizoram. (PTI)
Telecom giant BSNL providing poor network in Nagaland
Kohima:Telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is providing poor network throughout Nagaland for the past two weeks since the Dimapur incident when mobile telephone service were disconnected by the government.Resentment has been expressed by ministers, bureaucrats, various organizations, political leaders and businessmen. Some minister have also tried to contact the CGM, NE Circle-II, but due to bad network it was not possible.One of the ministers said he had already informed the Union Minister of Communication through private mail about the BNSL’s failure.The services were temporarily disconnected to stop rumour mongering in the wake of the March 5 lynching of an accused.Bureaucrats were trying to make do with private mobile networks. Nagaland police seizes 1593 illegal SIM cards
Kohima:The Police Department conducted Special Drives across Nagaland to check the sale of Pre-activated SIM Cards, during which 1593 such SIM Cards were seized and 53 persons were arrested. In a release, Superintendent of Police (Crime/SCRB) of Kohima M. Tungoe stated that all authorised Dealers and Retailers have been informed that selling of these SIM cards is illegal and that if found doing so, serious legal action will be initiated against them. Therefore, such practices should be stopped immediately in the greater interest of the public. In this connection, cases have been registered against the offenders.The Police have also written to all the Mobile Operators and the Franchisees operating in the State to initiate action from their end to stop the sale of these SIM cards. They have also been asked to compile a Database of all such pre-activated SIM Cards in circulation or use and regularise them by asking the Users of such SIMs to submit proper documents within a stipulated period of time and de-activate them in case of failure to do so, the release said. District jail made functional in Arunachal
Itanagar:The district jail at Tezu, the headquarters of Lohit district in Arunachal Pradesh, was made functional on Wednesday after shifting of 34 undertrial prisoners (UTPs) lodged in various police lock-ups of the district.The jail has a capacity to keep 44 inmates.The state government had decided to make the jail functional immediately with the number of UTPs rising after setting up of Eastern Session Court at Tezu recently, Superintendent of Jully Jail here Michi Paku, who was designated to oversee the works to make the jail functional by the department, informed today.Paku has been camping at Tezu since past week to ensure that the basic necessities were in place in the jail.There are about 96 UTPs from the eastern districts comprising Lohit, Anjaw, Namsai, Longding, Changlang, Tirap, Dibang and Lower Dibang, whose cases are under trial in the session court, Paku said adding that they (UTPs) would be shifted in phased manner to the jail. He informed that an additional male ward with capacity of 50 inmates has already been allocated by the union ministry of home affairs. (PTI)
Man gets lifer for killing wife
Agartala:A local court of Dharmanagar in North Tripura sentenced a 28-year-old Braja Sundar Nath to life imprisonment yesterday for murdering his wife two years ago.The Court also slapped fine of Rs 2000 on him for committing the henious act. Superintendent of Police (North) Abhijit Saptarsi said, based on a complaint of the mother of the victim Anima Nath (24), police had registered a case under section 302 of IPC on February 15, 2013 in Kanchanpur Police station.In the investigation, it was established that Anima Nath was murdered by her husband and in-laws and hanged her body to a tree to establish it as a suicide.It was alleged that the accused person, hailing from Rabindranagar of Kanchanpur, used to torture his wife physically time and again. Based on the post-mortem report, it was revealed that there were certain injury marks on victim’s body and the probable cause of death was throttling leading to asphyxia and cardio-respiratory failure, Mr Saptarsi said.After two years of long trial, the court pronounced the sentence sending the accused to life imprisonment. Barpeta Food Poisoning
Barpeta:528 admitted so far in BMCH The number of people affected by food poisoning at Patbousi in Barpeta district of Assam on Monday went up to 528 today with all of them admitted to the Barpeta Medical College Hospital, hospital sources said. State health minister Nazrul Islam and PHE minister Sukur Ali today visited the patients at the hospital and assured them of all medical care. Talking to reporters, Islam said four of the patients who were in serious condition, were being treated at the ICU. The health minister also ordered the district Deputy Commissioner to inquire into the food poisoning incident as such cases occur frequently in Barpeta area. (PTI)
