TURA: Rongjeng town in East Garo Hills is playing host to a three-day trade fair showcasing the culture of Garo Hills beginning Friday, however, all is not normal with the preparations as invited guests have complained about lack of basic amenities at the venue.
With the festival kicking off on Friday, a large number of delegates from beyond Garo Hills had arrived on the scene but were allegedly surprised to find poor quality of service.
Several visiting dignitaries, including lady guests, have been critical about the absence of basic amenities even at their place of lodging at the Inspection Bungalow in Rongjeng.
On arrival they were reportedly shocked to find that the bungalow did not have even the basic amenities including clean water for a bath. The only sign of recent activity was the fresh coat of paint on the walls of the bungalow.
“We had to request villagers to allow us to use their bathrooms. We have ladies who are a part of our delegation. You can understand the immense difficulties they had to face looking for a place just to have a bath,” complained a delegate to The Shillong Times.
The constituency of Rongjeng is represented by Congress MLA Sengnam Marak.
The festival begins on Friday with a community cleaning drive in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan followed by the opening of the festival market place.
