Man gets lifer for family’s murder

Aizawl: A man who murdered all three members of his family in 2013 as they opposed his marriage to his lover has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the District and Sessions court of south Mizoram Lunglei district. C. Lalramzauva (39) murdered his mother Lianngengi (76), his eldest brother C. Vanlalbela (50) and Vanlalbela’s son Chhakchhuakthanga (11) on September 2, 2013 inside their home in Tawipui North. The prosecution said that Lalramzauva, after committing the crime, ransacked the house to mislead the police into believing that it was an outside job. He left the crime scene to stay with his widowed lover and pretended to learn about the incident the following morning, the prosecution said. He, however, later confessed to the crime and said that he murdered all his family members as they objected to his marrying his lover. Judge Marli Vankung convicted and sentenced him on Friday. Malayalam Film Fest in Dimapur from March 27

Kohima: The first-ever Malayalam Film Festival will be held from March 27 to 29 at MGM Higher Secondary School premises at Dimapur.The festival is sponsored by Kerala Chalachitra Academy and Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Academy as part of ‘DHAWNI’ a Nationwide Movie Festival of Award Winning Malayalam movies.In a statement, programme coordinator R K Nair informed that this is the first time that Dimapur has got an opportunity to highlight such a prestigious festival. In addition, Chalachitra Akademi has assured to make it as an annual event. A total of seven highly-acclaimed Malayalam movies will be presented during the festival and some of the movies will be screened with English sub titles to cater to the non Malayalee audience. The entry to the festival will be free. (UNI)

Nagaland Governor to launch ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ at Kohima

Kohima: Nagaland Governor P B Acharya will launch an awareness campaign on ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ on Monday at Old NST Junction in Kohima town.In a circular, Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) administrator Kovi Meyase asked all the panchayat chairmen in Kohima to attend the said programme and asked them to instruct their respective Ward Sanitation Committee to undertake a simultaneous sanitation drive in their respective ward at 1200 hrs to coincide with the Governor’s initiative. Nagaland chief secretary Pankaj Kumar will also be present on the occasion, official sources said. (UNI)

North East Welfare Society launches women helpline

Kohima: Naga Helpline, a 24X7 helpline service for women, was launched by the North East Welfare Society (NEWS) to curb the ever increasing crime against women, children and others.The helpline, which was launched yesterday, will support and facilitate voluntarily to the victims of domestic violence, racial discrimination, rape cases, molestation, gender insensitivity, child abuse and other relevant issues. Mr Netish Pandey, the Director,  “We Assamesse” said the helpline will act as a bridge between the victims and the law enforcing and justice delivering agencies. He also informed that different features will be added to the service in the near future. (UNI)

Woman imprisoned in Tripura for attemp on child’s life

Agartala: A local court of Khowai in West Tripura imprisoned a woman for three years term for attempting to murder her three-and-half month old girl child in June 2012 by flushing her down in a septic tank. The girl was rescued by her uncle and has been lodged in a home at Agartala. Police rescued the child alive from the septic tank. The baby was identified as daughter of Nitai Singha Roy and Seema Singha Roy, brother of Deepak. However, the couple refused to claim the baby and rather argued that their daughter died three days ago from acute fever. Later, the DNA test confirmed Seema and Nitai as her biological parents. Police arrested Seema and Nitai after three days of the incident. Meanwhile, the baby recovered and was sent to a ‘home’. Based on her confession, the court awarded her three years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 500. The court also acquitted her husband from the case. (UNI)
