SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Monday forcibly closed down a voters’ enrolment facilitation centre at the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills.A group of over 60 KSU members went to the DC’s office and demanded immediately closure of the centre in view of the assurance given by the state government two years back.Speaking to media persons, KSU organizing secretary Bansharai Warjri said they were opposed to state government’s decision to reopen the centre.Recalling that the KSU had opposed setting up of such centres in 2012, Warjri said, “The state government had then assured us to close the centre.”According to him, the Union had insisted that such centres should be set up at the respective areas to ensure that no doubtful or dubious voters get enrolled in the State electoral rolls.
There was a long queue of applicants, mostly from Mawryngkneng block, at the facilitation centre on Monday, when it was closed down.Warjri alleged that most of the applicants who had come to the DC’s office on Monday were from non-indigenous communities.Earlier, Additional District Magistrate R. Wahlang intervened into the sudden protest by the KSU members as Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal was not present.
