North Garo Hills fake encounter killings

SHILLONG: North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner W. Khyllep has asked the GSU and other pressure groups in the district to maintain peace and wait for the submission of the magisterial inquiry report on the death of Selba Sangma and Jekke Arengh at Potcheng Jongki village in the district.
The inquiry is headed by North Garo Hills Addl. District Magistrate L. Ch. Marak.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, two persons who claim to be eyewitnesses in the case stated that armed forces from Damra camp had killed Selba Sangma and Jekke Arengh in the fake encounter at Potcheng Jongki village in North Garo Hills.
CSWO Tura president Jenny Sangma along with the two eyewitnesses informed reporters here that on March 16, Selba Sangma and Jekke Arengh along with the two eyewitnesses – Dilnath Momin and Robin Momin – had gone to Potcheng Jongki village for hunting and they returned home only at 1:30 am after which all four persons decided to stay at Dilnath Momin’s house.
It was then when they heard the gun shot after which they wanted to come out but one person did not allow them to come out since the house was gheraoed by armed forces.
Next morning when they came out of the house they saw the bodies of Selba Sangma and Jekke Arengh, who they claimed were mere farmers and not AMEF militants as claimed by the Army.
The CSWO along with the eyewitnesses also met the government representatives on Tuesday and were assured of a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
